In modern computer networks, static IP and dynamic IP are two widely used IP address types. Although they are all IP addresses, there are significant differences between them. This paper will explain the concepts, advantages and disadvantages of static IP and dynamic IP, applicable scenarios, and how to choose the appropriate IP address type.
First, let's understand what a static IP is. A static IP is a fixed IP address assigned to a device in a computer network. The static IP address does not change, and it is the same every time you connect to the network. Static IP addresses are manually assigned by the network administrator and are usually used for devices that require a fixed IP address, such as servers, routers, etc.
Instead, a dynamic IP is the temporary IP address assigned to a device in a computer network. Dynamic IP addresses are automatically assigned by the Network Service Provider (ISP) and may change each time you connect to the network. Dynamic IP addresses are often used for personal devices, such as desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
Stability: Static IP addresses do not change, which makes them ideal for devices that require stable IP addresses, such as servers, routers, printers, etc.
Easy remote access: Because static IP addresses do not change, they are ideal for devices that require remote access. For example, if you need to access the server from a remote computer, you must use a static IP address.
Easier to set the network: Static IP address make the network set up easier. Because the static IP address is fixed, you can easily configure it to routers, firewalls, etc.
Expensive: Since static IP addresses are manually assigned by network administrators, additional costs are usually required.
Security: Because static IP addresses are more vulnerable to network attacks. An attacker can easily determine the IP address of the device and make targeted attacks.
Inflexible: Static IP addresses are inflexible and cannot be changed once assigned. If you need to change the IP address, you must contact your network administrator.
Cost savings: Since the dynamic IP addresses are automatically assigned by the ISP, no additional payment is required.
More secure: Dynamic IP addresses are more secure because they are temporary and harder to network attacks.
Flexibility: Dynamic IP addresses are more flexible because they can be changed. If you need to change the IP address, you can simply reconnect to the network.
Unstable: Because dynamic IP addresses are often changed, they are not suitable for devices that require stable IP addresses, such as servers, routers, printers, etc.
Not suitable for remote access: Because dynamic IP addresses are often changed, they are unsuitable for devices that require remote access. If you need to access the device from a remote computer, you must use a static IP address.
More difficult to set up a network: Dynamic IP addresses make network settings more difficult. Because the dynamic IP address changes frequently, you must change the network configuration frequently.
In this paper, we understand the concepts, advantages and disadvantages of static IP and dynamic IP. Regardless of which IP address type you choose, you should understand their strengths and weaknesses and make appropriate choices based on your needs.
